Randy started his career as an elementary school teacher in history, math and science, while also coaching football and basketball. In 1998 he started working for a construction firm in North Dakota, eventually helping them start and manage an electrical apprentice program. As their first official graduate, he then went on to get his electrician’s license and successfully grow as Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager and eventually Electrical Operations Manager.
In 2006, Randy moved to Royal, spending his first twelve years working in and managing the Arizona office and running several successful transportation and airfield projects. In 2018 he moved to Sacramento as an estimator, ultimately becoming the successor to Royal’s long time Chief Estimator, Eric Gardner “Senior”. Randy’s experience in so many roles in the industry gives him a very broad view of the construction process, which enables him to use his perspective in building comprehensive bids that support our clients and our project teams. In his role as Chief Estimator of our airport and underground projects, Randy shares his experience and good-natured personality with everyone around him.
Drawing upon his background as a teacher, Randy loves to develop and mentor young people at Royal. He is known for being a great facilitator and listener, with a talent for understanding what clients want and delivering outcomes of success for all stakeholders. Clients, project teams and field operations love to brainstorm with Randy because he is always happy to help and provide creative ideas. Randy has a B.S in Education with a Coaching Minor, which continues to drive his passion for teaching, training, and mentoring. His training and certifications include:
Volunteering is another of Randy’s passions. He’s involved with Habitat for Humanity, Feed My Starving Children, the For the Fifty Initiative of Rolling Hills Church, as well as missions in Haiti and China.
Randy loves traveling with his family, especially to destinations like Lake Tahoe, Monterey/Pebble Beach, and Coronado Island. His favorite pastimes include downhill skiing, hiking, paddleboarding, reading, quoting memorable movie lines, and golfing — as well as playing and watching almost every sport under the sun.
“Royal has a reputation for being the best airfield lighting contractor in the country, so that’s where I wanted to be. I love the people, and my coworkers are also some of my best friends. The office atmosphere on bid days is electric — pun intended. I can’t imagine working anywhere else.”
